Abstract

A survey of canine heartworm infections among 175 dogs (Male 97, Female 78) in Chuncheon area was performed from April 2000 to September 2001 using both a modified Knott`s test and an antigen test. Of 175 dogs, 45 dogs (25.7%) were infected with the Dirofilaria immitis, as revealed by an antigen-detecting test. Of these, 24 dogs (13.7%) were revealed to have microfilaria in the peripheral blood. The infection rates of heartworm in dogs at the age of 1∼3, 4∼6, 7∼13 years were 16%, 26.8%, and 37.8%, respectively. The difference in the prevalence rates of heartworm infections between the male and female dogs was not statistically signigicant.
