Soft tissue cephalometric norms for central India population: a lateral cephalometric study

Abstract

Background: To optimize facial attractiveness ‘norms are used to define what acceptable facial traits are and to establish a range of values within which lies acceptability. Norms of measurements serve as guidelines in calculating the change required to make a face more esthetic .However’ facial traits show considerable variations among different populations ‘as also the concept of beauty. Material and Methods: The sample size was fifty young adults (25 males, 25 females) in the age group of 15-25 years, were included in the study. All subjects demonstrated good facial profile, with good occlusion and pleasing profile. Using this sample, standard. Results: The results of the study pointed that soft tissue profile differentiate significantly between central India population and caucasians, this may be attributed to varying soft tissue thickness between different areas of the face. Conclusion: Comparison of our sample with other ethnic groups reaffirmed the need to develop separate standards for different populations. Therefore, it is legitimate and important for those undertaking orthodontic treatment of Central India population.
