Abstract
BEGINNING IN 1926 when she painted her first Self-Portrait at the age of nineteen, and ending shortly before her death in 1954 with Marxism Will Give Health to the Sick, the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo produced some 66 self-portraits plus about 80 paintings of other subjects, mostly still lifes and portraits of friends. Her self-portraits record her birth, her childhood, her marriage to the muralist Diego Rivera, divorce and reconciliation, miscarriage, her sadness over not being able to bear children, and finally the misery of numerous surgical operations that never cured the injuries to her leg and spine from a bus accident that nearly killed her when she was eighteen.
