Abstract

Mayekawa/Mycom has developed a standardized water heat source CO2 transcritical heat pump Eco-Cute with the world's largest heating capacity of 100 kW. The heat pump simultaneously provides both hot and cold water with a combined COP of 8.0. The water heat source CO2 heat pumps were installed into food industry in Japan utilizing waste heat to supply hot water and cold water simultaneously. The system is now functioning as a highly efficient heat pump with environmentally sound natural refrigerant CO2 instead of utilizing conventional and modern HCFC and HFC refrigerants with high to very high Global Warming Potential. This paper reports on the introduction, application and study of newly developed commercial size water heat source CO2 heat pumps. The report highlights two essential aspects, which are energy saving and the efficiency of less CO2 emission compared with a conventional system. The paper also introduces ideal applications of water heat source CO2 heat pump for the food processing and the air-conditioning industries in many cases, where unused energy such as waste heat in the industries and heat from ground, which exist everywhere, has not fully developed. With the use of CO2 heat pumps, it is no longer a distant dream to create combustion-free and low-carbon society.
