Abstract

Authentic assessment does not focus on rote memorization and taking pen and paper test passively. An authentic math test judges the analytical skills of students. It should also focus on the integration abilities of their learning, along with creativity in written and oral skills. An assessment is used for various purposes such as determining the learning level of students, finding out gaps in the learning, determining what teaching strategies are working and designing the curriculum. In this article, by keeping these things in mind. The researcher has discussed an authentic assessment, i.e. a reliable assessment and on which we can trust. Researcher has suggested some ways to improve the authenticity of the assessment these include, making the Assessment integral to the teaching-learning process in the classroom regularly, including informal self-assessment of the students, maintaining a portfolio of each child, and most importantly paying attention to students' mathematical thinking. Some current challenges that affect the authenticity of the assessment have also been discussed; these include teachers' incompetence, overburdened teachers, extensive focus on standardized testing, assessment policies of the schools and organizations, teachers' conception of the assessment and large class sizes. However, these challenges are not problems; these can be resolved through appropriate intervention.
