Abstract

Objective To investigate whether a slit-lamp examination using fluorescein is a reliable method for predicting orthokeratology lens fittings. Methods Observational study. Orthokeratology lens fitting was evaluated with a camera recording using different amounts of fluorescein at different time points, before and after applying topical anesthesia and opening the eyelid. Results Orthokeratology lens fitting using fluorescein can be influenced by many factors, including the amount of fluorescein applied, the timing of the evaluation, the tear reservoir, topical anesthetics, ocular surface sensitivity, tension, position when manually holding the eyelid open, corneal astigmatism, and corneal diameter. Pictures taken under different conditions varied significantly. Conclusion Orthokeratology lens fitting using fluorescein tends to be affected by various factors as well as observational bias, and thus it is not reliable for predicting orthokeratology lens fitting.
