Abstract
Horizontal drilling offers promise as a way to increase production by changing the geometry of the well from primarily vertical to horizontal. Unfortunately horizontal drilling is expensive. If the production increase is to be an economic one, the cost of horizontal drilling must be kept as low as possible. This paper analyzes the feasibility of reducing the cost of horizontal drilling by turning sharper curves using as much conventional and as little costly special equipment as possible while making every foot drilled geometrically effective.
