Qualitative study of the effect of patients care experience in the emergency department on the care ability of new nurses

Objective To investigate patients care experience of new nurses in the emergency department so as to provide evidences for the cultivation of humanistic care ability for new nurses. Methods A total of 15 new nurses who worked in the emergency department and cared patients more than 12 h one day from 1st February 2017 to 15th March 2017 were selected using purpose sampling method. Data was analyzed and concluded, and themes were extracted using phenomenological method and Colaizzi content analysis method. Results There were three themes: close attention and understanding of the care needs of emergency patients; experiencing care through taking care of emergency patients; the effect of caring for patient experience on self care and humanistic care ability. Conclusions The experience of caregivers of patients in emergency department is a positive way to cultivate the humanistic care ability of new nurses.
