Extraction of magnetic intraocular foreign body by vitreous route without vitrectomy

Objective To investigate the clinical effects of extraction of magnetic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) by vitreous route without vitrectomy for eyes with clear vitreous body and good vision.Methods Traumatic eyes of magnetic IOFB with inapparent vitreous opacity and good vision were recruited in the study.The foreign bodies could be seen in the vitreous,on the surface of the retina or embeded in the retina respectively by the ophthalmoscope.A total of 12 patients ( 12 eyes) with magnetic IOFBs and preoperative corrected visual acuity (VA) ≥0.6 were treated.Under optical fiber,the magnetic IOFBs were extracted by magnetic - blocks relay method within 2 -6 days after the trauma.5 eyes of 12 eyes that the IOFBs had been seen in the retina were treated by laser photocoagulation around the IOFB and extraction the magnetic IOFB later.Results IOFBs in all the 12 cases had been extracted successfully.All eyes got corrected VA of ≥0.6 at 2 months postoperatively,and without complications such as retinal detachment or cataract.Conclusions Extraction of magnetic IOFB by vitreous route without vitrectomy is a safe,reliable and less complication method for those eyes with clear vitreous body and good vision.
