A clinical study of AcrySof toric intraocular lens implantation

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect of AcrySof Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation to correct preexisting corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery. Methods This study included 33 eyes of 23 patients with Preexisting corneal astigmatism having cataract surgery. The implantation of the AcrySof Toric IOL was performed after phacoemulsification. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), preexisting corneal astigmatism, residual astigmatism and Toric IOL axis were measured. Results The postoperative UCVA was 0.71±0.21, 0.5 or better in 85% of eyes, 0.8 or better in 67%. The postoperative BCVA was 0.82±0.25, 0.5 or better in 94% of the eyes, 0.8 or better in 85%. The mean refractive cylinder decreased significantly after surgery from (2.57±0.95)D to (0.64±0.32)D (P 0.05). The achieved correction / The anticipated correction was ≥50% in 91%, ≥70% in 79%, ≥90% in 52%, ≥100% in 33%, >100% in 18%, respectively. The mean Toric IOL misalignment was (3.15±1.79) degrees, less than 10° in 100% of the eyes. Conclusions The results indicate that AcrySof Toric IOL implantation is an effective, safe and predictable method to correct corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery.
