Study of visual quality of zero spherical aberration intraocular lens

Abstract
Objective To study the difference of postoperative high-order aberration and binocular visual quality between two kinds of IOL:Zero Spherical Aberration Intraocular Lens (Akreos AO),Negative spherical aberration Intraocular Lens (Tecnis ZA9003),in order to assess the visual quality and investigate the clinical results.Methods Sixty patients (120 eyes) with cataract underwent surgery from October 2012 to March 2013,and were divided into 2 groups.Group 1:unifocal and aspherical intraocular lens (Zero Spherical Aberration Akreos AO),Group 2:unifocal and aspherical intraocular lens (negative aberration Tecnis ZA9003).Ocular refraction,distance visual acuity and depth of focus were observed at 3 months postoperatively.The aberrations were measured with the i-Trace wavefront aberrometer.ANOVA was used to analyze the data.Results There was no significant difference in the UCDVA and BCDVA among eyes with these IOLs.The mean spherical equivalent had no statistical difference between groups.The Akreos AO group was better in depth of focus,the difference had statistical significance (F =1.421,P =0.046).Spherical aberration Z(4,0) was 0.04±0.04 □m,while vertical coma Z(3,-1) was-0.01±0.13 in Akreos AO group,the difference comparing the other group had statistical significance (P <0.05).There was no difference in Z(3,+l) (horizontal coma),trefoil and total high-order aberration between the two IOL groups (P >0.05).Conclusions This study shows the evidence that Zero Spherical Aberration lens provides the patients better quality of vision because of the decreased spherical aberration and increased focus depth.
