The application of heavy silicone oil in traumatic retinal detachment surgery

Objective To evaluate the clinical effficiency,postoperative complications and safety in patients after heavy silicone oil intraocular tamponade for traumatic retinal detachment.Methods Fifteen patients( 16 eyes) of traumatic retinal detachment were treated with par plana vitrectomy and heavy silicone oil ( Densiron - 68) tamponade.The tamponade persisted for 2 months to 5 months,and were followed up for 3 months to 6 months after heavy silicone oil removal.The visual acuity,intraocular pressure,the lens,retina and silicone oil emulsification were observed.Results Anatomical reattachment were achieved in 13 cases (14 eyes,87.5％ ) after removal of Densiron -68.Best corrected visual acuity improved in 11 cases(12 eyes,75％ ).Retinal redetachment occurred in 2 patients.One case had front proliferative vitrous retinopathy and was tamponaded with infused common silicone oil again.The retina was anatomical reattachment in following up.One case had heavy choroid detachment and the eyeball was removed.The main complication was silicone oil emulsification which appeared 2 weeks to 2 months after operation,( 1.28 ±0.12) months averagely.Conclusion Heavy silicone oil intraocular tamponade for traumatic retinal detachment has positive effect and improve patient comfort,but it emulsificates soon after surgery.
