Abstract

Objective To study the effect of medial approach on recurrent laryngeal nerve dissection in total thyroidectomy and subtotal thyroidectomy. Methods The clinical data of 281 patients with medial approach for recurrent laryngeal nerve dissection in total thyroidectomy and subtotal thyroidectomy were analyzed. Results Five hundred and thirty-seven recurrent laryngeal nerve were dissected during the surgery. There were 3 cases of hoarseness after operation. Two cases were treated by relieving swelling, nerve nutrition for two weeks, the pronunciation returned to normal. One case of hoarseness improved, but not fully recovered, and was considered permanent paralysis after laryngoscopy six months later. Conclusions In order to reduce the recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, the method of medial approach to anatomy the recurrent laryngeal nerve is safe and effective in thyroid surgery. Key words: Total thyroidectomy;  Subtotal thyroidectomy;  Medial approach;  Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury;  Complications
