The significance of recurrent laryngeal nerve exposure in total thyroidectomy

Abstract

Objective To investigate the significance and the effect of exposing recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN)in total thyroidectomy.Methods A total of 201 laryngeal nerves were exposed in 116 cases total thyroidectomy from December 2006 to December 2008.The patients'data were analyzed retrospectively.Results Unilateral or bilateral RLN were exposed successfully during operation,including one case of right non recuurent RLN.No Permanent or temporary RLN injury occured.RLN injury rate was 0.Conclusions During total thyroidectomy for thyroid diseases,RLNs should be dissected routinely around the inferior thyroid artery.The exposure of RLN can avoid the morbidity of the nerve injury.
