Study of anxiety and depression in patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Objective To investigate the incidence rate of anxiety and depression in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and observe the effect of comprehensive intervention.Methods Sixty - nine patients with DM were investigated with Zung self - rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self- rating depression scale (SDS),and they were reviewed after receiving medical (benzodiazepines) and psychological intervention for 8 weeks.Results Patients with DM had varying degrees anxiety - depression symptoms.The scores of SAS and SDS significantly reduced separately from 47.35 + 8.72 to 35.56 ± 7.28 and from 52.37 ± 9.34 to 42.14 ± 7.77,P < 0.01.The incidence rate of anxiety and depression were remarkably separately decreased form 49.3% to 21.7% and form 43.5% to 17.4%,P < 0.001.Conclusions The incidence of anxiety and depression in patients with DM is high,the comprehensive intervention with drugs and counselling can reduce the incidence rate of them.
