The effect of Bigbag intraocular lens implantation with phacoemulsification on patients with high myopia and cataract

Abstract

Objective To investigate the early effects of pha- coemulsification and Bigbag intraocular lens (IOL) implantation on patients with high myopia and cataract. Methods Eighteen patients (30 eyes) underwent phacoemulsification and Bigbag IOL implanta- tion (test group). Seventeen patients (28 eyes) underwent pha- coemulsification and Rayner IOL implantation (control group). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and variations in the distance from the posterior capsule membrane to the retina were measured before surgery and 1 month after surgery, and postoperative complications were observed. Results One month after surgery, the BCVA of 3 eyes were below 4.5 in the test group, 10 eyes were between 4.5 and 4.7, and 17 eyes were above 4.8, which was no different from the control group. The variations in distance from the posterior cap- sule membrane to the retina were significantly different between the test group [(1.49+0.03)mm] and the control group [(1.93+0.06)mm]. Variation in the test group was less than that of the control group (P〈0.05). Conclusion Bigbag IOL implants, like other IOL im- plants, not only helps the patients obtain good distance acuity after cataract surgery, but also functions to support the posterior capsule membrane because of its special design. It is effective and safe, and should reduce the risk of retinal detachment for those with high myopia. Key words: lens, intraocular;  high myopia;  cataract;  phacoemulsification
