Abstract

Objective:To understand the histological and anatomic characteristics of the gubernaculum testis, and to research the role of the gubernaculum in the process of testicular descent. Methods:The testicular position, morphology, histology and location of gubernaculum testis of 14 dead fetuses with different gestational age were studied. Results:Gubernaculum testis consisted of striated muscle with the lower extremity attaching to the symphysis pubis and inguinal ligament. It shortens and attenuated gradually as the testicle descends. Conclusions:The human gubernaculum testis may play the role of leading and drawing testicle down through the inguinal canal in the process of testicular descending, but it can't draw the testicle into the scrotum. The absence and the premature regression of gubernaculum testes may be important factors causing undesended testicles. Key words: Testis; Cryptorchism; Gubernaculum testis
