Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the clinical efficacy of α1 adrenoceptor antagonist tamsulosin in the treatment of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) combinded with acute urinary retention. Methods 70 patients with BPH combinded with acute urinary retention were randomly divided into treatment group and control group with 35 in each group. All the patients were treated with indwelling catheter, oral antibiotics and the patients in treatment group were given tamsulosin 0.4 mg once a day for 7 days. The catheter was removed after 7 days. Results After removal of the catheter, 47.1%(33/70) of patients could? urinate? by themselves successfully. The effective rate was 68.6%(24/35) in the tamsulosin treatment group and 25.7%(9/35) in the control group, respectively(P<0.01). Conclusions Treatment with tamsulosin is effective in raising the success rate of voiding without catheter after an episode of acute urinary retention. The efficacy of treatment is not influenced by the volume of prostate. Key words: Prostatic Hyperplasia; Urinary Retention; Tammlosin
