Abstract
We start by identifying some common criticisms of official and business language and then work through the main criteria we use to identify effective style – appropriate content and appropriate tone. Many business communicators advocate plain English as the appropriate style to meet these criteria and we review both the main supporting claims and the criticisms of this approach.
