Clinical value of sonographic calcification patterns in thyroid nodules

Abstract

The sonographical and pathological data were studied retrospectively from 1 501 consecutive patients who underwent thyroidectomy for nodular thyroid disease.The results showed calcification could be found in both benign and malignant nodules.The distribution of calcification models was similar in both benign and malignant nodules,with microcalcification as the most common pattern(n=207).Althoulgh thyroid cancer has higher rates of calcification and microcalcification compared with benign lesions,the clinical value of calcification and microcalcification on sonography is limited in predicting malignancy.
