Clinical application of the intermittent catheterization in postoperative orthopaedic patients with urinary retention

Abstract
Objective
To investigate the clinical application of the intermittent catheterization in postoperative orthopaedic patients with urinary retention in whom the induced urination is invalid.
Methods
From May 2010 to May 2013, 100 cases of postoperative patients with urinary retention in whom the induced urination was invalid. Each 50 cases were randomly divided into experimental group and control group. Intermittent urethral catheterization was used in the experimental group. Indwelling urinary catheter was used in the control group. Self-urination time, urethral pain, the rate of placing a urinary catheter again and laboratory examination indexes were compared between the two groups.
Results
Self- urination time(h)in the experimental group was 12.26±8.24. Self- urination time(h)in the control group was 46.85±20.28.2 cases had the urinary tract pain in the experimental group, while 16 cases in the control group had the urinary tract pain.No one needed to place a urinary catheter again in the experimental group, while 2 cases placed a urinary catheter again in the control group. Urinary tract infection rate was 2% in the experimental group and 20% in the control group. The differences of these parameters between the two groups were significant(P<0.05 or P<0.01).
Conclusions
Intermittent urethral catheterization for the orthopaedic postoperative patients with urinary retention could reduce the incidence of urinary tract infection, shorten the Self- urination time, reduce the occurrence of urinary tract pain. Intermittent urethral catheterization is a practical nursing technology which is worthy of promotion.
