Analysis of flouting of the maxims and implicatures in the movie of Fifty Shades of Grey (pragmatics approach)

This research aims to describe the maxims being flouted in the film. Besides, this research also aims to describe the strategies being exploited to flout the maxims. Moreover, this research aims to explain why the characters perform the strategies in flouting the maxims.Data in the form of utterances were collected from dialogues in the film entitled of Fifty Shades of Grey. The collected data were arranged to be listed of types of flouting of the maxims performed by the characters and what implicatures are behind the flouting of the maxims.    The results of this research are as follows. First, all types of flouting of the maxims are found in the movie, they are flouting of the maxim of quantity, flouting of the maxim of quality, flouting of the maxim of relevance, and flouting of the maxim of manner. Second, All strategies are used to flout the maxim except banter strategy. Overstatement and Understatement are used to flout the maxim of quantity. Hyperbole, metaphor, and irony are used to flout the maxim of quality. Irrelevance is used to flout the maxim of relevance. Obscurity and rhetorical questions are used to flout the maxim of manner. Third, there are four illocutionary functions that become the reason to flout the maxims, they are competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. In occurrence, the flouting of the maxim of relevance is mostly used in the movie because the main characters try to change the topic to hide something in case to keep their secret. In line with the types of maxims being flouted, irrelevance is the strategy that is mostly used in the movie. Meanwhile, collaborative reason becomes the main reason to flout the maxim, because the characters use the utterance to assert something especially when the main characters of the movie have a conversation.Keywords:    maxims, implicature, Fifty Shades of Grey
