Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the quality of teacher’s work life in Tabora, Tanzania. Data were collected from 6 O-Level secondary schools in Tabora Municipality in which 100 secondary school teachers were involved. This study employed a survey design; within quantitative research approach. Teachers Likert Scale, Observational schedule and questionnaire were used to gather primary data. Both Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS-Version 16.0) and Excel were used in analysis of descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed that, most of the teachers 49% walk more than 5 miles to and from the school. About 95% of teachers said they are not given transport and hence they use private transport. Furthermore, the results revealed that, at any school, the teachers have different requirements that make them work smoothly in secondary schools. However, these requirements were not met either by the school Government nor the government. Yet, teachers were overloaded by too many periods and thus contributing poor quality work life. Teaching and learning materials were the most needed inputs by the teachers. About 47% teachers were in the view that, if the teaching and learning materials will be provided to these schools, then, the teachers will improve teaching and learning process. Despite the fact that, motivation is the most required thing for the teachers to work satisfactorily, yet the schools and the government as a whole were not motivating the teachers. Therefore the findings revealed that, 48% of teachers said they were not satisfied with the teaching profession. However, the teachers in town had a more improved quality of work life as compared to their counterpart teachers in rural areas.
