Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview on decimal fractions. Decimal fractions are a special way of writing proper fractions that have denominators beginning with one and ending with one or more zeros. The period before the digits is the decimal point; the digits following it are said to stand in certain decimal places. The word decimal means relating to the number 10, and to calculate fractions by decimals is simply to extend into the field of fractions the same method of counting that is employed when dealing with whole numbers. To change any common fraction into decimals, the numerator is divided by the denominator and the quotient is written in decimal form.
