A 200 km long band of showers adjoining an approximately 20,000 km 2 area of continuous precipitation was observed by radar.A translating curve was found to be the best locus for the shower reflectivity maxima. The shower band was divided into numerous simple shower elements.Detailed examination of the horizontal motion and rainwater structure (from reflectivity) of the elements suggested that the squall line consisted of a large number of short lasting cells (10-20 min) often grouped into a smaller number of multicellular storms. The entire precipitation pattern could be explained by a hypothetical mesoscale upward motion field moving through convectively unstable air.A steady-state model was developed for such a system. The model was very sensitive to the assumed structure of upward motion and assumed vertical thermodynamic structure of the air.i i -r i "1-.~RESUMÉ Une longue bande d'averses de 200 km contigue à une zone d'approximativement 20,000 km 2 fût observée sur radar.
