Abstract
The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive presentation about the interrelationships between highway design, driving behavior, driving dynamics, and traffic safety. To do this, recent knowledge and practical experience were collected, classified, and arranged to permit practical application in all relevant fields of highway design and traffic safety. The book is organized in three parts: (1) Network; (2) Alignment; and (3) Cross Sections. The book is based, to a great extent, on research--examining highway engineering with special emphasis on geometric design and traffic safety--conducted over the last two decades, which has led to the development of three Safety Criteria for distinguishing good, fair, and poor design practices on newly designed or existing roadway sections and a Safety Module for evaluating road networks. It takes into account numerous research studies from international colleagues and organizations. Special chapters dealing with traffic safety issues worldwide, human factors, and vehicular safety are included in Part 2 - Alignment. The book is intended for academia, university research and research institutions, national and international consultants, highway agencies at federal, state and local level, highway engineering professionals in general, and policy makers and researchers focusing on updating geometric guidelines.
