Abstract
In recent years, biofuel which is a product of microbial, has gained the interest of researchers as an alternative fuel that substitutes both petrol and diesel. The increase in the demand of biofuel is due to its environmentally friendly property which can reduce the pollution caused by crude oil such as petrol and diesel. Besides that, the demand of other microbial products such as vitamins, antibiotics, vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs has also increased. Hence, in order to fulfill these demands, the production of the microbial needs to be improved by understanding the mechanism of microbial growth which can be studied using an experimental apparatus called continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) or chemostat. There are many chemostat models have been introduced and the analysis of the models has been done to improve the production yield of microbial in the chemostat. Therefore, this paper aims to provide an outline of the several existing chemostat models together with the microbial kinetics growth models that have been proposed previously. It is found that the chemostat models have always been improved by considering different type of microbial kinetics growth models and the analysis of the models has been done to improve the microbial production. This paper also provides the analysis of chemostat model which considers a single substrate and single species of microorganism. It is found that the simple chemostat model is stable without any oscillatory solutions.
