Reducing environmental risk through urban waste utilization (case study Benowo waste power plant – Surabaya)

Abstract

Waste if not properly managed will result in environmental pollution both to the soil, water and air. Handling and controlling waste becomes complicated with the increasingly complex types and composition of waste in line with the increasingly advanced culture. This is in line with the electricity policy which provides opportunities to various parties in the business of independent power producers, especially those sourced from new and renewable energy that is environmentally friendly. The electric power generation system integrated in the waste management system is expected to generate economic added value and provide solutions to waste problems. In connection with the development plan of the Benowo Waste Power Plant (PLTSa), to obtain an efficient and effective power generation system it is necessary to identify the characteristics of the waste collected in the landfill, the technique of handling waste at the landfill site, the type of waste and the volume of waste that can be utilized after being sorted and selected for recycling (recycle, re-use), the calorific value of the specific heat of existing waste (biomass potential) for energy, infrastructure and facilities at the landfill. This research was conducted to look at the feasibility of a Waste Power Plant (PLTSa) with the technology of utilizing methane gas as a generator for generating electricity and heat energy and / or syngas into electricity. The assessment included data on municipal waste management and PLTSa technology.
