Abstract Each of the three medium access controls that have been standardized by the IEEE has its own features and frame format. MAC layer bridges that interconnect IEEE 802 LANs must observe the MAC protocols on each LAN and must make transformations on frames that are forwarded from one LAN to another. This paper discusses the functions that bridges must perform to receive, transform, and transmit frames properly between any combination of IEEE 802 LANs.
