Abstract
The topic of sustainable remediation is increasingly important for many policy makers, researchers, and practitioners. This chapter provides a broad overview on the subject from a holistic perspective, where the environmental, social, and economic benefits of remediation are maximized for all stakeholders, inside and outside of the site boundary, in both current and future generations. For sustainable remediation to be effective, it is imperative that social-environmental management plans are put into action at contaminated sites. In this context, sustainable remediation has broad implications that go beyond appraising the sustainability of different cleanup strategies for a given site.
