Abstract

The special theory of relativity introduces three phenomena that are absent from pre-relativity physics: Frame-dependent synchronization, time dilation, and length contraction. These features are closely related to one another, and all are related to the way in which clocks are synchronized. Although many people, including some physicists, find these features counterintuitive and disturbing, the theory depends on all three for its internal consistency. This paper is a tutorial that uses a thought experiment to illustrate the relationship between these phenomena, employing simple calculations based on the Lorentz transformation.
