Abstract
The Levant comprises the states of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordan (plus the Sinai peninsula), while Mesopotamia is largely synonymous with Iraq. When Turkey, Iran, Arabia and Egypt are added, the larger region is known as the Near or Middle East, extending no farther east than the Gulf of Oman.
