Abstract

Another role of codes, standards, and regulations is to provide negotiable constraints or &s;soft&s; constraints. This type of constraint will be changed if necessary during the TSS session. Its primary role is to guide us through the proper routes or lines of reasoning. What is important in this latter role is that the constraints may be relaxed if necessary while in the former role they are fixed until the end of the analysis. Therefore, the &s;hard&s; constraints reduce the number of alternatives while the &s;soft&s; ones select the better alternatives through negotiation.
