Abstract

Since March 2008, the Japan Freight Railway Company (referred to below as JR Freight) has been introducing the Positioning System for Rail Network and Safety Operating (PRANETS). This is an operation support system that uses a cab-mounted terminal to give locomotive drivers advance notice on speed-restricted sections, warn them against excessive speed and implement departure guidance at stations.
