Abstract

This Capstone project examines the benefits of field trips on elementary school students through literature review, questionnaires completed by local teachers, and student surveys. The project also inquires about the opportunities that elementary school students in Monterey County are given to explore outside the classroom. Disadvantages to excursions are also considered when reflecting on the decline of field trips in recent years and how the Common Core State Standards might influence this downturn. The project concludes that field trips are a necessity within public education and should be preserved to ensure that all students have opportunities to meaningfully engage with the curriculum and create long-lasting memories.
