Abstract

This chapter discusses the effects of housing and management systems on the welfare of cattle and the different possible causes of cattle welfare problems such as breeding procedures and consequent difficulties; ill-treatment; neglect; inadequacies in design of housing; inadequate management system or poor husbandry on the farm; mutilations of the animals including those which are unnecessary and poorly executed; and poor conditions and procedures during moving or loading, transport, in market and in slaughterhouses; and provision for emergencies.
