Abstract
Figurative language is the way to know the types of figurative language in the literary work especially in song lyrics. Many people listen to the english song as hobby but they do not understand the meaning. The researcher feels so interested to analyze the song lyric of Bob Dylan because it is very impotant for everyone to study the figurative language. This research is formulated into two questions: 1. What types of figurative languages are found in Bob Dylan’s lyrics? 2. How does figurative language support to the themes in Bob Dylan’s song lyrics?. It has purpose to identify the types of figurative language in Bob Dylan’s Song Lyric. It also to know how the figurative language can support to the themes of Bob Dylan’s song lyrics. The researcher uses Rozakis’s theory (1995) in analyzing Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’s Album in 1960 which contains 13 tittle of songs. It was focused on three types of figurative language on it; methapor, hyperbole, and personification. This research is most suitable using descriptive analysis and qualitative approach. The researcher uses three steps in analyzing the data. First, classifying the data based on theory. Second, analyzing the data that was classified in figurative language. Finally, the researcher concludes the result of the analysis. After categorizing data, the researcher explains the process of classifying data into kinds of figurative language and describes contextual meaning of each with giving several example of different context to make another understanding from one word. The results of this study finds 71 data contained figurative language. It shows that there are 3 types of figurative language and its meaning. From the analysis, the researcher finds that Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’s Song Lyrics use many hyperbole in the song. Finally, the researcher gives suggestion for the next research concerning the same topic or may be more specific.
