Abstract

Cognitive impairment is a core symptom frequently reported in schizophrenia and believed to be influenced by glutamatergic genes. It is believed that the symptoms of schizophrenia such as cognition lie on a continuum, known as schizotypy. This theory of schizotypy suggests that the characteristics of schizophrenia can be observed in the general population but at a sub-clinical level. This thesis investigates cognition across the schizotypy-schizophrenia continuum and demonstrates the role of the glutamatergic system. It is hoped that this research will reduce stigma surrounding mental illness and contribute to the development of targeted treatment for cognitive symptoms.
