An Examination on the Influence of Mother Tongue in English Language Learning

Abstract

English being the global language, it becomes very essential to learn the language. Though English is not the most spoken language in the world, it is the official language in a large number of countries. Moreover, it is estimated that the number of people in the world who use English to communicate on a regular basis is approximately 2 billion. This indicates the necessity of learning English language. But the non-native speakers find a few difficulties while using the language owing to the influence of mother tongue. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the mother tongue in English Language Learning. This study was conducted in Erode District from June 2015 to September 2015. The researchers administered questionnaire method for collecting data from the students. This study identified four important dimensions of influence on mother tongue in English language learning. This study found that speaking dimensions will have significant impact on English language learning and it helps educationalists to frame suitable policies relating to learning of English.
