Abstract
A study is reported which attempted to obtain information on how states are approaching the seismic retrofit problem. The details of the survey are summarized, and the results are tabulated and discussed. Programs in various states are noted. Retrofitting bridges may be performed at two levels: the system level, and the component level. The system level changes involve retrofitting the structural system so that the seismic forces imparted to the bridge are reduced (dynamic isolators). Component level changes involve the retrofitting of piers and hinges. The encasement of foundations in new reinforced concrete jackets, and the better anchoring of abutments are also discussed.
