EVALUATION OF URINE GRAM STAIN IN DIAGNOSING URINARY TRACT INFECTION IN CHILDREN

Abstract

Urinary tract infection is the most common of all the bacterial infection. This study was to determine the validity of rapid diagnostic tests for early detection of urinary tract infection in children. In our study 50 children aged between 1-5 years of suspected urinary tract infection were included in this study. Urine samples obtained from these children and were evaluated for urinary tract infection by urine microscopy, urine dipstick nitrite and leukocyte esterase, and urine gram stain, and the gold standard test urine culture and sensitivity. Using the gold standard test, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the other screening tests as mentioned above were determined and compared. In conclusion urine gram stain is a very sensitive and specific test for diagnosing urinary tract infection compared to other screening tests.
