Abstract
The issue of freight transportation choice has been of continuing interest over the last three decades. During this period at least four general models have be en reported in the literature. In addition, numerous empirical articles have examined freight transportation choice independent of any theoretical or conceptual framework. Little effort has been expended toward comparing the models or developing a theory of freight transportation choice based on them. This article reviews the models of freight transportation choice within the context of the empirical evidence reported in the literature and proposes an overall theory that is consistent with the empirical results.
