Abstract

This paper focuses on the hydraulic and structural performance of a multi-functional breakwater, combining harbour protection and energy conversion due to overtopping waves. This innovative breakwater - developed by the Second University of Naples - is named OBREC (Overtopping BReakwater for the Energy Conversion). The OBREC design is such that this solution can be proposed also for habour renovation and/or maintenance plans, in micro-tidal sites The paper summarises the results of the laboratory campaigns and integrates them with the recent numerical modelling activity aimed to support the OBREC design optimization. The results are discussed with reference to the recently deployed OBREC installation at prototype scale in the harbour of Naples, Italy.
