Abstract

This chapter reviews some of the ways interactive video lessons are being successfully employed to meet new goals in instruction and training. Interactive videodisc instruction (IVI) is increasing exponentially, particularly in the industrial and military sectors. Practice in interactive video lessons enables trainees to gain much needed experience, to learn from their errors, and to minimize disasters when operating real equipment. Practice decision making in IVI ultimately transfers well to real situations and provides greater success than other instruction, such as workshops. Students can begin instruction whenever they are ready without waiting until a new class forms. Instruction can, and often does, occur in the workplace. Students can experience the simulated workplace. They can hear the sounds of the factory, the hospital, or the laboratory while at the same time observing the skills of experienced workers. IVI is also appealing to workers who lack basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic.
