Section 1 The essence of counselling and psychotherapy: the goal of counselling and psychotherapy a model for the counselling process empathy - the foundation for all psychotherapy the qualities of the therapeutic relationship the nature of the therapeutic alliance. Section 2 The foundation of counselling and psychotherapy: the role of theory in counselling and psychotherapy culture, gender, and lifestyle issues in counselling and psychotherapy the process of change in counselling and psychotherapy the ethics of counselling and psychotherapy. Section 3 The skill of counselling and psychotherapy: listening - the fundamental skill developing a language of empathy (affective vocabulary) non-verbal understanding and responding facilitation versus blocking (the observation form) techniques in counselling and psychotherapy. Section 4 The practice of counselling and psychotherapy: the nature of requests the initial interview developing a treatment plan on ending (termination). Appendices - aids for more effective practice: affective vocabulary list techniques of counselling forms a compendium of counselling forms suggested procedures for crisis intervention and management suggested procedures for suicide intervention.
