Abstract

Torsional vibrations in ship propulsion systems have always been an important subject of great interest to marine engineers and shipbuilders who aim to reduce or prevent vibration problems, because vibrations may interfere with the engine function, cause fracture, structural fatigue, or failure on the ship's structure or in system components. This paper presents the analysis of torsional vibrations in the ship propulsion system. The aim of this paper is to provide the torsional vibration measurement process on the ship propulsion system, to calculate the critical speed of a rotating shaft and to determine whether the resulting torsional vibration stresses are within the permissible limits or not. The procedure of this measuring process is in accordance with the classification rule requirements of the Croatian Register of Shipping. This paper also describes the new technologies that enable precise measurements of torsional vibrations.
