INSTITUTIONAL RACISM REFLECTED IN TATE TAYLOR’SMOVIE “THE HELP”

This research paper analyzed the institutional racism expressed in The Help movie. The movie was created by Tate Taylor and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2011. The research discussed institutional racism by analyzing the cause, action and effect of the institutional racism. This research applied qualitative study. The data were gathered by watching the movie, reading the movie’s script, and identifying the data using the institutional racism theory. This research applies institutional racism theory by Better (2003), and Miller & Garran (2008). The causes of institutional racism are some rules of the institution that separated the both race; there are Jim Crow Laws, White Citizen Council, and Ku Klux Klan. The actions of the institutional racism are reflected in their behavior such as in public transport and facilities, in the job, and attitudes. The effects of the institutional racism are reflected in both races. The whites as the superiors and the African American as the minorities. The whites become dominant and arbitrarily. The African Americans become frustrated, annoyed and being treated unfairly.
