Abstract

In the paper, the topic of Passive Optical Network (PON) is discussed and the whole structure and operation of the optical network based on passive optical components is listed and explained. Passive optical networks and its components are passive optical structures, where passive optical couplers are installed at the point of connection instead of active equipment, which divide the input optical information stream into a number of physical paths. The types of PON networks are also listed and the techniques of multiplexing and demultiplexing in PON are listed and explained. The main feature of the PON network is that it has no active components in the distribution network, and belongs to a new generation of fiber optic based access networks.
