An analysis of directive illocutionary act in Coco Movie by Lee Unkrich

The purpose of this research is to know the types of directive illocutionary acts which are contained in Coco movie by Lee Unkrich. There are directive illocutionary acts found and analyzed based on context. It means that the directive illocutionary acts is often used in every utterance. The other goal of this research is to divide the act into direct and indirect one. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method by watching the movie, collected the data which relate to the research, observed and analyzed the types of directive illocutionary acts and how they are conveyed it with reference to the linguistics theories. The researcher used the speech act theory by Yule and let the other theories to support the research. The researcher found and analyzed 53 data of directive illocutionary acts which were used by the character in the movie. Those are: 25 data of directive commanding, 11 data of directive ordering, 10 data of directive requesting, and 7 data of directive suggesting. The reason why commanding is more dominantly used by the characters in this movie is because this movie has more adult character and only one character is a child, that is Miguel. Beside that, there are many situations that allow characters to express directive of commanding. Then, 37 data is conveyed directly and 16 are conveyed indirectly, it is because most of context in this movie allow characters to say the utterance directly and also because there is a close kinship between all the characters. Thus it is not awkward to say directly.
