Abstract

The aim of present study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity of plant extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis, Zingiber officinale and Cinnamomum zeylanicum against Enterococcus faecalis. Three alcoholic extracts were obtained through the maceration process, then the microorganism was inoculated in Petri dishes with heart brain agar and Mueller Hilton agar, filter paper discs were placed with 100µl of each treatment, according to the design: T1(Cinnamomum zeylanicum), T2(Zingiber officinale), T3(Rosmarinus officinalis), gentamicin(160mg/2ml) as a positive control and distilled water as a negative control, the Petri dishes were incubated at 37oC for 24 hours. The results obtained were collected in pre-prepared tables and then studied by the Tukey test in order to determine the most effective treatment. It is concluded that the extract of 100% Rosmarinus officinalis presented a halo of inhibition of 9.6 mm, 75% a halo of 18.33 mm, 50% an inhibition of 16.33 mm and 25% a halo of 12.66 mm, while the Zingiber officinale extract at concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%, showed an inhibition halo of 11 mm, 25 mm, 13 mm and 7 mm respectively and the Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract 100% had a halo of inhibition of 8.66 mm, 75% a halo of 8.33 mm, 50% an inhibition of 14 mm and 25% a halo of 6.33 mm, demonstrating that the most sensitive treatment to inhibit Enterococcus faecalis was the 75% Zingiber officinale.
